Horsepower Productions
Computer Rock / Tropic
Decades since he helped light the touch paper for dubstep with his early turns on Tempa, Benny Ill steers Horsepower productions around the hardcore ‘nuum with patented steez.
The project’s classic tropes - cinematic samples, 2-stepping breaks and subcontinent infuelcnes - are rife on the sub-loaded roller ‘Tropic’, and squashed with a ruder thrust into the ’91-style breakbeat hardcore of ‘Computer Rock’, before taking the slower, scenic route to hardcore hip hop-laced ones adjacent classic J. Saul Kane on the bleep-spangled swag of ‘Kase Reprise’ and the dubbed out early hardcore flexor ‘Blaque Gras’. Also in step with early J. Saul Kane cuts that would often be played on the unintended 45rpm, not 33rpm, ‘Kase 2 Part 2’ speeds up for a more manic effect, peppered with hip-shot mentasms closer to early Tom & Jerry.
